THE GUT-BRAIN CONNECTION

UNDERSTANDING THE GUT-BRAIN CONNECTION

Your intestines are home to various bacteria that make up what is referred to as the "microbiome". A majority of these bacteria are actually beneficial and play many well-known key roles in the body from regulating digestion to supporting the immune system. But these beneficial bacteria also play an important role in mood and neurological health. Bacteria in the gut microbiome are responsible for stimulating the production of neurotransmitters, which are signals used by the nervous system. You may have heard of some popular neurotransmitters such as "serotonin", "dopamine", "epinephrine", or "norepinephrine". Each one of these neurotransmitters plays a different critical role in wellness.

MENTAL HEALTH STARTS IN THE GUT

For example, the neurotransmitter serotonin is common referred to as the "feel-good hormone" because of the large role that it plays in mood conditions. Though most people think that neurotransmitters are found in the brain, over 90% of serotonin is actually found in the gut due to the microbiome. So, when the gut microbiome is unhealthy or imbalanced, serotonin production is hindered, which leads to depressed and negative mood.
