LYME DISEASE & COINFECTIONS

UNDERSTANDING LYME DISEASE

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted by the bite from a black-legged ticks. Though Lyme is commonly thought of as an East coast condition, Lyme bacteria is actually present in ticks all across the United States as well as over sixty other countries. Once transmitted, the bacterium travels through the bloodstream, establishes itself in various body tissues, which is why the symptoms are so varied.  This is also why Lyme disease is commonly misdiagnosed as other conditions. Typically, immediate symptoms may include fatigue, fever, chills, headaches, joint/muscle pain, and a rash (though not everyone reports all of these symptoms). However, if not diagnosed, long-term effects of Lyme disease can cause fatigue, joint and muscle pain (particularly in the neck), sleep issues, cognitive disturbances or neuropathy, depression, cardiovascular effects (such as heart palpitations), depression, facial palsy, headaches, or possible miscarriage. If you believe that you may be experiencing symptoms of Lyme disease, discuss testing options with your clinical nutritionist. Your practitioner can help to design a nutrition intervention plan to manage your personal health concerns.
