UNDERSTANDING NUTRIGENOMICS

Nutrigenomics is the most specific form of personalized nutrition therapy. Sometimes referred to as “nutritional genomics”, the field of nutrigenomics attempts to personalize individual nutritional needs and determine the role nutrients play in the expression of an individual’s genes. It is the scientific study of the interaction between nutrition and an individual’s genetic expression, especially concerning the prevention or management of disease.

Understanding nutrigenomics

Personalized nutrition therapies focus on pinpointing the best diet and supplementation plans according to what you need. And nothing is more you than your genes. Your DNA is a set of instructions that tells your body all about you. Your DNA is organized into chromosomes that are further organized into genes. Cells use the DNA instructions from your genes to make proteins the same way that you would follow instructions to assemble a piece of furniture. Those proteins are crucial to so many processes in the body from giving cells their shape to digesting food or carrying oxygen throughout the body. There are a vast amount of different types of cells in the body, from brain cells to skin cells to red blood cells. But, no matter what the variety, every cell in the body contains the same copy of your DNA instructions inside it. So, how does the body know whether to build a skin cell or a brain cell from those instructions? Well, the body depends in master genetic “switches” that can be turned on and off to make sure that the right proteins are made.

What can this test tell me about my health?

The same process happens with the genetic coding for the development of certain diseases. By looking at your test results, a practitioner can help you determine whether or not you may have a predisposition for a particular trait, from conditions like lactose intolerance to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Though it is commonly thought that your genetics are absolute, the genetic master switches discussed previously can actually be turned on and off by factors in your diet, environment, and lifestyle, such as particular foods or stress. These genomic tests can also help tell your practitioner all about your body, such as your natural weight, muscle composition, and the effect of saturated fats. By looking at the DNA instructions for your body, your practitioner can help devise a nutrition, supplement, and lifestyle plan that can help manage and lower the risks of developing any of the reported predispositions. If you are interested in having nutrigenomic education included in your management plan, talk to your qualified nutrition therapist today! And, don’t worry, no blood, it’s just a saliva test!

Where Can I order a genomics test?

Your practitioner can order a genomic test for you from a few different companies based upon how comprehensive you would like your test to be. Many laboratories are currently offering tests that can be used for nutrigenomic education, including 23andMe, Genos, and Nutrigenomix. Upon testing completion, you will receive a complete copy of your results along with your personalized health recommendations.
