THYROID & ADRENAL CONDITIONS
COMMON THYROID CONDITIONS
The thyroid is a gland that secretes hormones regulating growth and development through the rate of metabolism. Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid is overstimulated by the body, typically resulting in irritability, muscle weakness, sleeping problems, tachycardia (an abnormally fast heartbeat), heat intolerance, diarrhea, and weight loss. Conversely, hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid is under stimulated by the body, typically resulting in an inability to tolerate cold, fatigue, constipation, depression, and weight gain. Autoimmune conditions of the thyroid include Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and Grave's Disease.
COMMON ADRENAL CONDITIONS
The adrenals are glands that produce a variety of hormones including adrenaline and the steroids aldosterone and cortisol. Adrenal fatigue or adrenal exhaustion are common conditions closely connected to vagus nerve dysfunction which are caused by excessive stress or a prolonged state of hyper excitability. In both conditions, the ability of the adrenals to continue creating cortisol is diminished, resulting in fatigue, lethargy, depression, anxiety, food intolerances, decreased ability to handle stress, heart palpitations, blood sugar changes, low body temperature, diarrhea, and/or constipation. The genetic cause of a lack of cortisol production is called congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). The autoimmune cause of this condition is called Addison's Disease, though, with Addison's Disease there is also typically a lack of aldosterone production. Conversely, the autoimmune disease responsible for an overproduction of cortisol is called Cushing's syndrome, which may result in weight gain, fatty tissue deposits, stretch marks or frail skin, acne, hirsutism (excess body or facial hair), irregular or absent menstrual cycle, decreased libido, decreased fertility, erectile dysfunction, irritability, cognitive difficulties, headaches, or bone loss.
